In His Own Image

"Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

So God created man in his own image,

in the image of God he created him;

male and female he created them." ~ Genesis 1:26~27

A friend of mine sent me her bible study notes from this particular passage, "my study notes say- image... likeness. No distinction should be made between "image" and "likeness," which are synonyms in both OT (5:1, 9:6) and the NT (1Cor 11:7, Col 3:10, Jas 3:9) Since man is made in God's image, every human being is worthy of honor and respect; he is neither to be murdered (9:6) nor cursed (Jas 3:9)."

"So God created man in his own image..."

I wonder at times why God chose to give me a son with a brain disorder. Though I have kicked and railed against His sovereign hand in this, I have never felt a compassion so deeply for men and women afflicted with diseases such as schizophrenia. My husband and I talk often of the homeless men we see, just walking around talking to themselves on our city streets. Our hearts break, time and time again.

Can we truly feel unless a surgeon's knife cuts the surface? And is it only to feel, is it not to heal? Heal a wandering heart, so prone to wander, that forgets his fellow man and looks the other way?

"in the image of God he created him"
