Parking at Psalm 42
Thank God for David! I love his honesty throughout the Psalms and I love that God saw fit to share his prayers in His word.
In my recent meditation on Psalm 42 I have found it somewhat comical that we sang this song back in the 80's like we were running through a lovely meadow:
"As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food
day and night,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?” verses 1~3
I'm no bible scholar, but as I read further in this Psalm, I'm thinking David is extremely desperate. He cries out "Why have you forgotten me?", then quickly reminds his soul to trust in God. I love this, I'm living this.
And in case I doubted that he was desperate, he puts this right smack in the middle of the Psalm..."Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have gone over me."
Imagine...
the depths of Niagra Falls, and that roar! Unless you've experienced it, it's hard to grasp. But try this...picture Niagra Falls calling to hurricane like waves. "Deep calls to deep..."
And the waves, the breakers going over your head. The power. The magnitude.
Yet David tells his soul, "Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God."
Yes, I shall again praise him and see his salvation! The living God.
"The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters." Psalm 29:3
